An abnormal Pap smear doesnt necessarily mean you have cervical cancer. In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis.
Other things can cause cells to look abnormal, including irritation, some infections (such as a yeast infection), growths (such as polyps in the uterus), and changes in hormones that occur during pregnancy or menopause. Although these things may make cervical cells look abnormal, they are not related to cancer.
Most people feel a cramping sensation during the colposcopy-taking 600mg ibuprofen (3 Advil) about an hour before can alleviate any pain you might have. You should feel well enough to resume normal activity immediately. Bleeding or brownish-black discharge is normal for several days.
Increased blood flow, specifically to the uterus, during early pregnancy, may give the vagina and cervix a bluish or purplish appearance, also known as the Chadwick sign. Edema due to increased blood circulation also plays a role in softening the cervix.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Lots of different things can cause changes in your cervical cells, such as an infection HPV, for example and hormonal changes that happen throughout life, like when youre pregnant or going through menopause. Most of the time, changes happen quite slowly in the cervix, and they can be detected by a Pap smear test.
Cervical ectropion happens when cells that line the inside of your cervix grow on the outside. These cells are redder and are more sensitive than the cells typically on the outside, which is why they may cause symptoms, like bleeding and discharge, for some women.
For example, cervical endometriosis may be characterized by red, black and/or blue cervical lesions; adenomyosis may affect the cervix resulting in discoloration; and pseudocyesis may trigger a release of pregnancy hormones which can result in the Chadwick sign.
