Military operations in hostile conditions Those soldiers who are combat veterans are authorized permanent wear of the SSI of the unit they fought with on their right shoulder. This shoulder sleeve insignia recognizes former wartime service and is frequently called a combat patch.
Shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) are cloth emblems worn on the shoulders of US Army uniforms to identify the primary headquarters to which a Soldier is assigned. Most military units smaller than brigades do not have SSI, but rather wear the SSI of a higher headquarters.
These emblems, coats of arms, initials, symbols and other military identifiers (hereafter referred to collectively as Military Service marks) may not be used without prior permission.
History. The rank of technician fifth grade was authorized on 26 January 1942, per Executive Order No. 9041, and was adopted by the Army effective 1 June 1942. The rank insignia was finalized on 4 September 1942, adding a block T below the existing two chevrons.
Initially, the technician ranks used the same insignia as staff sergeant, sergeant, and corporal, respectively, but on 4 September 1942, Change 1 to Army Regulation 600-35 added a T for technician underneath the standard chevron design that corresponded with that grade.
Air Force. Technical sergeant, tech sgt or TSgt in informal parlance, is the sixth enlisted rank (pay grade E-6) in the U.S. Air Force, just above staff sergeant and below master sergeant.
The Army still used chevrons on top and rockers beneath, but now added a conspicuous capital T in the field underneath the chevrons. The T stood for Technician and indicated some special trade. Technicians didnt lead men. They did specialized jobs, like drafting or crystal grinding.
