To get a darker engraving result on leather, you can adjust the laser engraving settings either by using a higher power or a lower speed.
Applying a chemical darkening solution specifically formulated to react with the metal surface is a third method. Once applied to the engraving and dried, the solution can be rinsed away, leaving just the darkened engraved sections. Finally, rubbing black ink or enamel paint into the engraving can provide dark accents.
Antiquing: This paint-like process is very simple yet effective if you want to just touch up your engraving and make it a bit darker in order for it to stand out. The jeweler simply rubs the antiquing formula over the engraving, and lets it fill in the carving.
Adding color to engraving on any surface helps bring out details making them easier to see. This is especially helpful when your design has letters or other small details that may be hard to see. Each of the options Im using comes in a variety of colors.

Re: darkening engraved letters Id try clear coating the letters and adjacent areas, then fill the letters in with black paint and then sand the board back down to bare wood. The clear coat will be a barrier between the black paint and the wood and prevent the black paint from staining the wood.
When looking to achieve a dark black appearance, treating wood with solutions such as water and borax or baking soda before engraving can be helpful. Other makers find that using products designed to enhance appearance after engraving is ideal.
My paint of choice is Rust-Oleum flat black (non-aerosol). This is available at hardware stores everywhere. There are other flat black paints available, and they probably work just as well. Be sure to use flat black and not satin black, as satin black produces small amount of shine which is undesirable.
