The ASC CDL is a common standard that color correctors can translate their proprietary settings to and from. The ASC CDL functions are mathematically orthogonal primitives that can be used to represent vendor-specific corrections.
Slope, Offset, Power (SOP) The ASC-CDL standard defines the filter formula and its parameters that can be applied to code values of each of the three RGB color channels of an image: Slope multiplies the code values with a factor. Offset applies an offset (adds or subtracts) to all code values.
There are two principal factors you need to be cognizant of while color correcting your footage: color balance and dynamic range. Color balance refers to balancing the amount of red, green and blue recorded onto your footage.
The three tone curve parameters are Slope, Offset and Power. These parameters are simple mathematical operations, which allow the colourist to modify the incoming data. Slope is a multiplier to the incoming data. Offset is a summation to the incoming data. Power is a power function to the incoming data.
The American Society of Cinematographers Colour Decision List (ASC CDL) colour correction specification defines a common language format for primary colour correction. It is becoming a standard defined by the ASC and has been adopted by most major manufacturers.
CDLs are all in all easier to transfer between different softwares and easier to maintain. They are also commonly used for exchange between vfx and editorial/grading/screening. However, a LUT is the easier thing to apply and also makes sure the look stays defined and is not altered easily.
Slope, Offset and Power These algorithms allow the camera to modify the recorded image. Slope multiplies the incoming data. Offset is sum of the incoming data. Power is a power function to the incoming data.
Offset controls Shadows/Blacks of an image. It does this by changing the brightness/color levels while leaving midtones and highlight areas unaffected. Gamma = Midtones (middle gray levels) Gain = Highlights/Whites.
