Dot gain, or TVI (tonal value increase), is a phenomenon that causes printed material to look darker than intended. This happens because the diameter of halftone dots increases during the prepress and printing process.
Its called dot gain and occurs whenever a squeegee is pulled across a screen, causing pressure. Dot gain happens with all inks and will happen to anyone. Screen printers typically choose 30% dot gain. Check out the blog below for more information about adjusting artwork for dot gain.
If you never set your gray working space, it is probably some default 15-20% Dot Gain. 20% Dot Gain is closest to gamma 1.8, and 25% is the closest to 2.2 (30% is also close, but brighter and therefore a worse error).
In Photoshop, choose Edit Color Settings. You can now enter your dot gain values obtained from your printing company. Typically, newspapers tend to be about 35%, magazines 25% and higher end glossy products are 22%. This number from your printer is usually taken from the 50% screen.
Dot gain is a phenomenon that causes printed material to look darker than intended. This happens because the diameter of halftone dots increases during the prepress and printing process.
Reduce Printing Pressure One of the most common causes of dot gain is too much pressure being applied to the substrate during the printing process. Flexographic printing is a pressure sensitive process and excess pressure (or too little) can adversely affect your final print quality.
Dot gain is the difference between the output tonal value (process value or measured value) and the linear value. Without dot gain, the output tonal value would be identical to the input tonal value; in other words, the measured tonal value would be equivalent to the nominal value. = dot gain = 65% - 50% = 15%.
Dot gain is the enlargement of screen dots by the printing process. An image can thus appear darker and/or a color shift may occur. Normally, dot gain is measured in the midtones at 40% and in the shadows at 80%.
