To maximise the impact of deep-sky images, boosting the signal-to-noise ratio is key, and dark frames can help you do this successfully. In astrophotography, signal is the light emitted from a deep-sky object for example, a galaxy or nebula while the noise is produced by our cameras internal systems.
As long as the dark frames are taken at the right temperature and when the images are dithered, just a few dark frames will be sufficient. How good do your DSLR darks need to be? sinica.edu.tw gallery darktests sinica.edu.tw gallery darktests
Either close the shutter or cap your telescope. Bias frames should be recorded at the same temperature as your light frames (the actual exposure of your target), and using all the same camera gain or ISO settings. If you take your biases during the day, be careful that there are no light leaks getting to your sensor. There are 4 types of calibration frames that we need to use: Darks, Bias, Flats, and Dark Flats. Dark frames are used to correct for hot pixels on the image sensor and sensor heat noise, which includes any amp glow from the sensor. Dithering is also a method of smoothing the edges between two color regions by mixing their pixels so the edges appear to blend together. In 3ds Max, you have the option of setting dithering if you are rendering for the limited colors of an 8-bit display (256 colors).

Generally, you should only dither audio when bouncing down to 24-bits or less. You dont have to worry about dithering if youre exporting a 32-bit floating-point file or higher because its a high enough resolution that produces no audible quantization distortion.
How to Take Dark Frames Place the dust cover back on your telescope or camera lens. Cover the viewfinder to prevent reflected light hitting the camera sensor. Take the images using the exact same settings and in the exact same conditions that you used for your light frames.
