Burn and Dodge tool To use these tools, simply select the tool you want to use, then set the brush you want to use and the range (Midtones, Shadows or Highlights) from the options bar. You can also change the exposure of the tool. Once youve set these, you simply brush over the area you want to lighten or darken.
The Lighten mode compares the base colors and the colors of the blending layer, and keeps the lighter color. The Screen mode inverts the base colors and multiplies with the colors of the blending layer. This creates the opposite effect of the Multiply mode.
Darken Blending Modes darkens dark pixels and makes white pixels transparent. Lighten Blending Modes lightens light pixels while making blacks transparent. Contrast Blending Modes makes all pixels that are 50% grey become transparent while lighter pixels get lighter and darker pixels get darker.

Darken compares the pixels of the base layer with the blend layer, then selects the darkest pixels to give the layer a darkened appearance. In our example, you can see the image darkens with a photo, color, or gradient overlay using this mode. This is one of the most commonly used blending modes in Photoshop.
A Blending Mode simply tells two layers how to work together to create a combined image. Photoshop will check any overlapping pixels between those two layers and then, depending on the blending mode youve chosen, decide how those pixels will blend.
