Headers and footers, where page numbers usually reside, are greyed out when the insertion point is in the main body of the document. This cannot be changed.
Heres how: Open a Microsoft Word document. Click + drag the cursor to select the text that has a gray highlight. Hold Ctrl and select each section to select multiple sections of text. Press Ctrl+A to select all the text in the document. Once selected, you can remove the gray highlight.
Why is the header faded in Word? The faded appearance of headers footers in Words Print Layout view is deliberate. It provides a visual cue to differentiate between the page headers and the main content for the on screen view only, and will print normally.
