What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
Doctors remove a cone-shaped piece of tissue from the cervix in a procedure called conization. They may use conization to remove precancerous tissue high up in the cervical canal, along with a border of surrounding healthy tissue, to help ensure that all of the precancerous cells have been taken out.
Cervical Dysplasia A condition in which abnormal cells are present in the cervix. Symptoms include abnormal vaginal discharge, spotting between menstrual periods, bleeding after intercourse.
These conditions are not yet cancer. But if they arent treated, there is a chance that these abnormal changes may become cervical cancer. If left untreated, it may take 10 years or more for precancerous conditions of the cervix to turn into cervical cancer, but in rare cases this can happen in less time.
CIN 1 (low grade) up to one third of the thickness of the lining covering the cervix has abnormal cells. CIN 2 (high grade) up to two thirds of the thickness of the lining covering the cervix has abnormal cells. CIN 3 (high grade) the full thickness of the lining covering the cervix has abnormal cells.
CIN 3 means the full thickness of the cervical surface layer is affected by abnormal cells. CIN 3 is also called carcinoma-in-situ. This sounds like cancer, but CIN 3 is not cervical cancer. Cancer develops when the deeper layers of the cervix are affected by abnormal cells.
Epithelial cell abnormalities This means that the cells lining the cervix or vagina show changes that might be cancer or a pre-cancer. This category is divided into several groups for squamous cells and glandular cells.
Because stage 0 precancers are likely to eventually spread deeper into the tissue and become cancerous, they should be treated. Early Cervical Cancer (Stages IIIA) Advanced Cervical Cancer (Stages IIBIVA) Stage IVB and Recurrent Cervical Cancer.
