One of the biggest challenges with engraving on metal with your Cricut Maker is that it can be hard to see your design. You may think it needs to be deeper, but what you need is contrast. Usually, you would do that by adding black ink or enamel to darken the engraved area.
When looking to achieve a dark black appearance, treating wood with solutions such as water and borax or baking soda before engraving can be helpful. Other makers find that using products designed to enhance appearance after engraving is ideal.

You could easily use a paper adhesive mask, which is available from any sign shop. This paper product is also known in the sign industry as premask or transfer tape. After covering the surface of the leather, you would laser through the paper and into the leather. Your next step would be to apply the paint. My paint of choice is Rust-Oleum flat black (non-aerosol). This is available at hardware stores everywhere. There are other flat black paints available, and they probably work just as well. Be sure to use flat black and not satin black, as satin black produces small amount of shine which is undesirable.
