When looking to achieve a dark black appearance, treating wood with solutions such as water and borax or baking soda before engraving can be helpful. Other makers find that using products designed to enhance appearance after engraving is ideal.

To produce the black effects we want, the out-of-focus technique is used to keep the focus away from the material, which reduces the peak power and keeps the laser from damaging the metal surface.

You could easily use a paper adhesive mask, which is available from any sign shop. This paper product is also known in the sign industry as premask or transfer tape. After covering the surface of the leather, you would laser through the paper and into the leather. Your next step would be to apply the paint.

After your leather engraving is done, you can clean off any laser stains, marks, or burns by wiping the leather with a special leather cleaner or a cloth dipped lightly in rubbing alcohol. You should always seal your leather engravings after you clean any laser debris off of it. Sealing the leather helps preserve it.
Adjust your lasers speed and power settings. A lower speed and higher power setting will typically darken the engraving as the laser has more time to burn the material. However, be careful not to burn the leather.
