To produce the black effects we want, the out-of-focus technique is used to keep the focus away from the material, which reduces the peak power and keeps the laser from damaging the metal surface.
Mostly, fiber laser engraver are used for engraving metals because they are specially made for metal marking. But you can also use a powerful diode laser for color engraving.
In order to get started with color engraving, there are two methods you can consider. Antiquing: This paint-like process is very simple yet effective if you want to just touch up your engraving and make it a bit darker in order for it to stand out. Enameling: Enameling is another way to do color engraving!
Extremely short laser pulses cause structures on the surface at the nanometer level. The microstructured surface ensures that light scattering is reduced, and creates a marking with constant depth and a consistent black colour.
My paint of choice is Rust-Oleum flat black (non-aerosol). This is available at hardware stores everywhere. There are other flat black paints available, and they probably work just as well. Be sure to use flat black and not satin black, as satin black produces small amount of shine which is undesirable.
Multiple Passes: Run the laser engraver over the same area multiple times. This technique deepens the engraving, making it appear darker. Ensure that the laser is precisely aligned for each pass to avoid blurring or offsetting the design. Choose the Right Wood: Some woods naturally produce darker engravings.
When looking to achieve a dark black appearance, treating wood with solutions such as water and borax or baking soda before engraving can be helpful. Other makers find that using products designed to enhance appearance after engraving is ideal.
