whatamp;#39;s going on everybody today i want to talk about a technique called defocusing itamp;#39;s something that you can use both when youamp;#39;re etching lines or also when youamp;#39;re doing engravings so letamp;#39;s take a look okay so for in illustration purposes what i want to use as pointing out what defocusing does iamp;#39;m going to use these paint brushes so if you look at this paint brush this is a much thinner paint brush and so when you go to paint a line it will only be so thick when you go and you defocus your laser basically getting it out of focus that beam is going to widen as it goes past the focal point and you end up with a thicker line like this paintbrush so as it goes through and it brushes through it creates a thicker line so i have some flags that iamp;#39;m working on and iamp;#39;m going to use it to etch some lines in the flag so that way i can mask and then cut them and thatamp;#39;s one of the things that iamp;#39;m going to use it for b

When looking to achieve a dark black appearance, treating wood with solutions such as water and borax or baking soda before engraving can be helpful. Other makers find that using products designed to enhance appearance after engraving is ideal.

Re: darkening engraved letters Id try clear coating the letters and adjacent areas, then fill the letters in with black paint and then sand the board back down to bare wood. The clear coat will be a barrier between the black paint and the wood and prevent the black paint from staining the wood.
My paint of choice is Rust-Oleum flat black (non-aerosol). This is available at hardware stores everywhere. There are other flat black paints available, and they probably work just as well. Be sure to use flat black and not satin black, as satin black produces small amount of shine which is undesirable.
The material is usually some type of metal, but it can also be glass, wood, or plastic. The process of greyscale laser engraving is similar to traditional black and white photography. An image is first rendered in black and white, and then the laser is used to etch it into the material.
But still, you can do the color engraving in two ways. Firstly, you can use colored plastic for engraving. It will offer a different contrast than usual. Secondly, an artificial colored agent can be applied to plastic.
You should use Gravoxide which is designed to darken brass. Even Gun Black will work. Use a fine art paintbrush and brush the solution on.
