Change the background theme On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app . At the top left, tap Menu . Tap Settings. General settings. Tap Theme. Choose Light, Dark, or System default.
In theory, you could use ( prefers-color-scheme ) to override dark mode and force it to use a light background color. However, if youre going to take the time to try and force a white background, you may as well design a dark mode experience instead. Plus, as noted, this CSS query wont work for every email client.
How do I turn on dark mode in Outlook on the web or Outlook.com? General Appearance. Under Dark mode, select Dark. Select Save.
To enable dark mode for Gmail, click the gear icon in the top right and choose Themes. Scroll down to the section below the photo themes and select either the Dark or Terminal theme.
