When writing a story with a dark tone, you must know how to create a tense or oppressive atmosphere. One way to do this is by using specific words and phrases that convey a feeling of dread or unease. You can use it to make the reader feel like they are entering a dark and dangerous world.
The choice of words for a story can help establish its mood. If a writer wants to create a jarring or frustrating mood, they can choose specific words that are harsh and staccato-sounding; if they want to create a dark mood, they can use words with negative connotations to conjure brooding feelings.
In literature, a common symbol is using dark to mean bad/negative/evil and light to mean good/positive/righteous.
The room was bleak, cold and completely dark. It was quiet and somber in there and I felt a chill as the darkness engulfed me. It was the most piercing darkness ever-it was not merely the darkness that came out of absence of light, it was much more sinister.
Tell how the character feels (probably not really positive) and make the desciptive language something dark or however you want the reader to feel during that scene.
Strong atmosphere and tone The setting, choice of words, and imagery establishes a tense, creepy, and unsettling mood right from the start. Suspense and tension Keeping the audience guessing about what might happen next. Using mystery and thrill to build suspense.
When a dark tone is needed then do not place the very light tones on otherwise you will not achieve the degree of darkness required. In this instance the medium tones are added as a base then the stronger colours are laid on top of this darker base.
Generally, I think they mean is resonates with hopelessness, despair and/or depressive attitudes; lacking in hope and joy. Butif that is the way you see things, write what you feel, and damned be those who condemn it or tell you to write differently.
