Why is log footage grey?

What does it mean to film in log?

What is log video? Log is short for logarithmic. A log picture profile on your camera uses a different type of gamma curve than a standard profile such as Rec. 709. The benefit of shooting in log is that your video files will have a higher dynamic range.

Flat profiles allocate more data to the shadows and highlights, where the image information is more likely to be clipped or lost, and less data to the midtones, where the human eye is more tolerant.
