What is Radix 64 Encoding? Radix 64 encoding allows binary data stored in octets (i.e. bytes) to be expressed as printable characters.
Base64 is used because some systems are restricted to ASCII characters but are actually used for all kinds of data. Base64 can camouflage this data as ASCII and thus help this data pass validation.
Threat actors often disguise malicious scripts in email attachments or share documents infected with malware. One particularly elusive approach is to use Base64 encoding to hide malicious code within HTML content. This article details Base64 encoding as a technique to obfuscate HTML smuggled payloads.
Embedding Binary Data: Base64 is employed regularly to embed binary data, especially images and other media, directly into HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. This can improve website performance by decreasing HTTP requests since the data is loaded simultaneously with the webpage and doesnt necessitate a separate request.
Fundamentally, Base64 is used to encode binary data as printable text. This allows you to transport binary over protocols or mediums that cannot handle binary data formats and require simple text. [ Download now: A sysadmins guide to Bash scripting. ] Base64 uses 6-bit characters grouped into 24-bit sequences.
As we stated earlier, base64 is a binary to text encoding scheme that represents data in ACII string format and then carries that data across channels. If your data is made up of 2⁸ bit bytes and your network uses 2⁷ bit bytes, then you wont be able to transfer those data files. This is where base64 encoding comes in.
