This means that there are no additional post production settings being applied. So, what we are seeing is both files as shot directly by the camera. Notice how the zeroed RAW file is dark and lacks contrast compared to the zeroed JPEG.
If just adjusting exposure, highlights and shadows doesnt fix the issue, try the other Lightroom tools. A gradient filter, for example, can be applied to brighten a dark foreground without overexposing the sky. Try using a radial filter or brush to brighten your subject without affecting the background.
Once Lightroom has processed the data in the RAW file the JPEG preview is replaced by the RAW file. The RAW file is unprocessed, so appears darker, flatter, duller and with less contrast. Lightroom is not darkening your image, it is displaying the unprocessed RAW file.
If you find your photos to be too dark or too light its because of incorrect exposure. Exposure is the amount of light that gets into your camera and produces the picture on the image sensor. If a photo is too dark it means it has been underexposed and if it is too light it has been overexposed.
You can either brighten the entire image by moving the exposure slider. Add more contrast to the image by moving the contrast slider. The Whites slider works on the highlights parts of the image (useful when your highlights are clipped and you need to recover them)
Its actually very easy. Notice in the bottom-right, there is a crescent shape slider: Just click on it to change to Dark Mode, and click again to switch it back to Light Mode.
