Can you change the stain colour on a log home? Yes, but you cannot apply a new stain colour over an old stain or coating. We recommend removing the old stain or coating by blasting the logs or wood with crushed glass before re-staining a log home.
There are basically two types of finishes we recommend semitransparent and solid body stains. The type of finish chosen depends upon the log homes specific wood, the appearance the homeowner desires, and the level of maintenance that is acceptable to the homeowner.
Staining over an old, failing finish can lead to premature peeling or flaking of the new stain. Stripping eliminates this risk by ensuring a strong bond between the wood and the fresh stain.
We recommend re-staining your log home every 5 to 7 years however, weve seen homeowners docHub the 10 year mark when consistently doing the proper annual maintenance.
The new stain you are applying over the old stain should be compatible. For instance, if its an oil-based stain, apply another oil-based stain. If its a water-based stain, apply another water-based stain. Incompatible stains can lead to poor adhesion or blotchy and uneven finish.
I think one misconception is that you have to strip and sand a piece down to bare wood before you can re-stain it. Sometimes that is necessary, but if you have a piece without much of a topcoat (sealer, poly, etc) and the finish is in good shape, you can go over it with a gel stain.
Moisture will build up inside and voila, you have yourself a rot spot. Additionally, logs retain a certain level of moisture which would get trapped by the paint. Stain on the other hand, allows the logs to breathe while still repelling moisture. This is why stain is more suitable for log homes.
Oil-based stains are a one-coat application because the oil will repel the second coat whereas with water-based stains, the second coat can still absorb.
