Dry leather is more prone to cracking. Using a saddle conditioner too often is also a concern. If you over condition your saddle, the fibers will weaken and stretch, causing your saddle to lose its elasticity. While it wont crack, this problem will still take years off of your saddles lifespan.
Just like hair, you cant put dye on a dark product and expect it to change to a lighter color. You can change light brown into dark brown, you can change brown to black, and you can change faded black to true black. If youre looking to make a fun color, you have to start with something very light or white.
Oil damages the aesthetic appeal Leather is cherished for its natural beauty and unique grain patterns, but when oil is applied, it can darken or discolor the leather, diminishing its visual appeal. This reminder should instill a sense of caution and care when handling oily substances around your leather items.
If youre occasionally riding, you may not need to oil it for about six months. If you are riding a lot in variable weather conditions like a dry climate or high humidity, you will need to oil it sooner. After every ride, you should wipe down all leather equipment and then periodically give it a thorough cleaning.
Oil feeds the leather and is vital to keep it supple and flexible. That said, you should use it sparingly. Over-oiling can harm your saddles properties by making the leather stretch and cause the dye to seep. Remember, you dont have to oil your saddle for the first year of its life.
We always recommend carefully oiling your leather tack but if you realise youve applied too much and the leather has absorbed all it can, rinse your saddle with hot water, apply soap and rinse it again in clean water. Then leave it to dry for 24 hours and apply some conditioner.
To use, first prepare your leather product with Bates Glycerine Saddle Soap to remove any surface dirt and oil. Once clean and dry, apply Bates Leather Balsam liberally with a soft cloth working it into the leather in circular motions. Allow time for the balsam to be absorbed, overnight if required.
Cleaning should always be followed with a rich, wax-based dressing, such as Bates Leather Balsam. We do not recommend the use of oil on your saddle.
