Base64 encoding can disguise malicious code as noise that is imperceptible to humans. While Base64 encoding has legitimate uses for data transfers, its important to be cautious with images containing Base64-encoded strings, particularly if they arrive from unknown sources.
Base64 strings tend to end in one or two equal signs, but not always! These strings are not exact representations of the binary data in ASCII, because padding is applied to ensure the string length is a multiple of 4 characters. Each equal sign represents two bits of zero-padding.
Disadvantage of Base64 It increases the size of the data by about 33%. This can be an issue if you are transmitting data over a network or storing it on a disk, as it will take up more space. It is not a secure method of encoding data.
Base64 encoding is a format designed to prevent communication mishaps during the transfer of binary information. It achieves this through the conversion of binary data and a lookup table data is eventually made in a stream of ASCII characters, which can then be transmitted and decoded.
Reversing a Base64 encoded string involves decoding the Base64 representation back into its original binary form and then converting it to the original value or data.
Base64 encoding is a simple encoding method that provides a basic level of obfuscation, but its essential to understand that this is not encryption in the truest sense. Kubernetes Secrets use base64 encoding to ensure that secret values are stored and transmitted in a safe, human-readable format.
The presence of Base64-encoded data may indicate security-sensitive information or functionality that is worthy of further investigation. The data should be reviewed to determine whether it contains any interesting information, or provides any additional entry points for malicious input.
Then at some point you have to decode this pseudo-text back into an original data because base64 gibberish in itself is useless. Decoding performs similar binary operations but in reverse. The restored data is guaranteed to be exactly the same as before encoding.
Base64 Authentication Policy is used to authenticate clients with username and password only.
Base64 is not encryption. But yes, different input strings will always encode to different Base64-encoded strings, and the same input string will always encode to the same Base64-encoded string. Its not a hash though, so small changes in the input will only result in small changes in the output.
