in this tutorial weamp;#39;re going to look at a couple of different ways that you can darken an image with CSS so just got a very simple bit of markup on the page with an image tag that contains an image and letamp;#39;s say you want to make that image a little bit darker Tenshi is part of a hover effect or you just have some need to adjust the brightness on the page what Iamp;#39;m going to show you the super simple way to do this with a CSS filter but first Iamp;#39;m going to show you a slightly different way by modifying the images opacity value so here you can see immediately that the image becomes a lot lighter which might be the desired effect that youamp;#39;re after but if you want to make the image actually darker if we put a dark background in the image container element thatamp;#39;s wrapping the actual image then this will show through and make the image appear darker so now because that dark background is showing through it appears that the image is now darker and

The filter property is used to apply various graphical effects to an element. The brightness() function can be used as a value to apply a linear multiplier to make it appear darker or lighter than the original. To make an image darker, any value below 100% could be used to darken the image by that percentage.
Darken color on hover in CSS I can simply dial down the third parameter (lightness) in the hsl color format from 70% to 40%.
The filter: brightness(x%) function is used to dynamically change color by percentage. The x% value will manipulate the color to that specific value. This method for working with colors is less popular because it affects the specific element, meaning that some parts of your page may appear brighter than others.
Now, to generate a darker version of a color all we need to do is to create a color object by passing a hex code string to tinycolor, and then run the function darken(value), passing it a value between 0 and 100, depending on how much darker you want it.
Making Colors Lighter or Darker To make a color darker (this is called a shade of the original color), add a small amount of black. If you add too much black, your color will be almost black. Another way to darken a color is to mix in some of the complementary color (the opposite color on a color wheel - see below).
To generate a lighter or darker color using JavaScript, you can use the HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) color model. First, convert your color from RGB or HEX to HSL. Then, adjust the lightness value to make the color lighter or darker. Finally, convert the color back to RGB or HEX.
A hex colour such as #FCFCFC consists of three pairs representing RGB. The second part of each pair can be reduced to darken any colour without altering the colour considerably. Reducing the first part of each pair by a small amount will also darken the colour, but you will start to affect the colour more (eg.
/* Lighten a color */ color: mix(blue, white, 25%); /* Darken a color */ color: mix(blue, black, 25%); In this example, the mix() function takes three arguments: the base color, the light color (white for lightening, black for darkening), and the percentage of lightening or darkening.
