hi im steve friedman with rockstar excel and today im going to show you how to fix zip codes when excel strips out the leading zeros now the problem is u.s zip code should have five digits and sometimes they start with a zero but when excel sees the number it assumes that a number should not start with zero and will remove it so if you were to go here and type say zero whatever and then any four numbers excel will just change it and remove the zero now one way to fix that is if you start it with an apostrophe and then uh type start it with a zero that will make excel see it is text and it will keep the zero but if you have a spreadsheet with say 10 000 or so rows its not really practical to do that one at a time so theres a better solution and that is you use a formula that takes all of 10 seconds to do which is just equals text a2 or the cell that you want to change uh and then quote zero zero zero zero quote close parentheses uh and then that uh turns it into a five digit number

This is actually an Excel issue. The program automatically truncates all leading zeros from numbers in CSV files. The key is to change at least the columns where the leading zeros occur (i.e. ORG or Fund numbers) to text. There are two ways to accomplish this. First and simplest way: If the report needs to be .
When you type numbers that begin with zeros, like in some personal identification numbers, phone numbers, credit card numbers, product codes, or postal codes, Excel removes these leading zeros. To prevent this, you can first apply the Text format to the cells before you type or paste the numbers.
Steps to retain initial 0 when importing a CSV: Once you open the CSV file, right-click the column letter and select Format Cells. Then choose Custom, and set the format to 00000000. This will add the leading 0 to all cells from which it is missing. Now you can use the CSV file to import your record.
To preserve all the digits in text-formatted numbers, you have to import the downloaded CSV file as raw data into a new Excel spreadsheet, set the column datatypes as needed, and then save the new file as an Excel workbook. Excel (XLSX) files will preserve these formats, CSV files wont.
Shorten to Five Digits Insert a new column to the right of your current zip code column. Type or copy and paste =LEFT(C2,5) , replacing C2 with your cells identifier. Drag the formula down the rest of your column.
How to split a CSV or Excel file Open a new file in Excel. Enable macros. Open the macro editor. Copy the text below starting at Sub and ending with End Sub Paste it into the macro editor. Return to Excel from the macro editor. Save the file as a file of type . xlsm.
Answer: From the CSV file, highlight the entire column that contains the zip codes. Right click on the column and select Format Cells On the Number tab select Special. Under Type, select Zip Code. Click Ok. Save and close the CSV File. Import file.
Steps Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. Press Ctrl+1 to load the Format Cells dialog. Select the Number tab, then in the Category list, click Custom and then, in the Type box, type the number format, such as 000-00-0000 for a social security number code, or 00000 for a five-digit postal code.
