Charles Zona (CZ): Hello, and welcome to another McCrone Group webinar. My name is Charles Zona, and today we are happy to welcome Doug Meier. Doug is going to talk to us about X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, otherwise known as XPS. Before we get started I would like to give you a bit of Dougs background. Doug is a senior research scientist with McCrone Associates. He specializes in surface sensitive spectroscopies, such as Auger electron, X-ray photoelectron, infrared reflection absorption, thermal desorption, and low-energy electron diffraction. Doug was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerces Silver Medal for his work in the development of conductometric chemical microsensor array technology for the detection of chemical warfare agents. He also has over ten years of micro beam analysis experience prior to joining McCrone Associates. Doug will field questions from the audience immediately following todays presentation, and this webinar is being recorded and will be available o

XSP is XSwap's native cryptocurrency that is used throughout the blockchain with the utilities such as payments, farming, voting and staking.
The most prevalent electron spectrometer for XPS is the hemispherical electron analyzer. They have high energy resolution and spatial selection of the emitted electrons.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
In XPS, X-rays are sent to the sample and ejected electrons from sample are detected. In EDX, the electrons are sent to the sample and generated X-ray photons from sample are detected.
ESCA (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis), also known as XPS (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) is a method for characterizing the top few atomic layers at the surface of a solid. ESCA can not only give the elemental composition of a surface (C, O, N, etc.)
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. ... The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
XPS is also known as ESCA, an abbreviation for “electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis” introduced by Kai Siegbahn and his research group. Detection limits for most of the elements are in the parts per thousand range (1,000 PPM).
XPS can be used to analyze the surface chemistry of a material after an applied treatment such as fracturing, cutting or scraping. From non-stick cookware coatings to thin-film electronics and bio-active surfaces, XPS is the standard tool for surface material characterization.
How XPS Works. This technique uses an x-ray beam to excite the molecules on the surface of a sample, leading to a release of photoelectrons. By analyzing the energy of these photoelectrons, we can learn crucial elemental and chemical binding information about a material's surface.
