In screenplays, screenwriters use CUT TO on the far right to transition between certain scenes. In this case, theyll use SMASH CUT TO instead to imply there should be an abrupt visual contrast between the two scenes.
In a spec screenplay, typically, cut to can be considered extra and unnecessary words on the page (filler) or camera direction. So it is often recommended to be omitted or its use kept to a minimum. Plus in most situations, you dont need it or any transition between scenes. A new scene heading is transition enough.
CUT TO:, CUT TO BLACK., FADE IN:, and FADE OUT. are the commonly used transitions used today. Add transition in a separate line in capital letters where CUT TO:, CUT TO BLACK., and FADE OUT.
We use CUT TO: when we want to make a point of ending the scene where we did. For example, if you end a scene on a character telling his wife that hes sorry for cheating on her and it will never happen again, and the beginning of the next scene is him in bed with another woman, adding CUT TO: makes sense.
CUT TO: can be a useful transition when you need to be extra-clear were moving to a new place and/or time. However, with the presence of scene headers, it is by no means necessary, and in modern screenplays it is often not used at all. Ultimately, the use of CUT TO: is up to the writers personal preference.
Tell a good story. This is the single most important rule in all of screenwriting.
INTERCUTS are formatted like an action line, but in ALL CAPS and after youve indicated where each of the characters is via separate slug lines. You may use INTERCUT AS NEEDED if youre jumping between separate locations or INTERCUT CONVERSATION if its a phone call.
The Rule of Three Definition The Rule of Three in storytelling and screenwriting is a principle suggesting that concepts or ideas presented in threes are inherently more interesting, satisfying, and effective in their narrative impact.
