In this video, we will learn about the clinical evaluation of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). AFP is characterized by sudden onset of weakness and floppiness in any part of the body in a child less than 15 years of age or paralysis in a person of any age suspected to have polio. Acute refers to sudden onset and rapid progression of illness, while flaccidity and reduced tone indicate paralysis. Pleasure refers to severe weakness, and viruses refer to slight loss of motor strength. To avoid missing polio cases, all cases with current flaccid paralysis history or ambiguous signs should be included. AFC cases must have onset within the last six months. Tools for clinical examination in AFP cases include a measuring tape, reflex hammer, stethoscope, torch, toys, trophies, biscuits, etc.

The differential diagnosis of acute flaccid paralysis includes paralytic poliomyelitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome and transverse myelitis. Less common etiologies are traumatic neuritis, encephalitis, meningitis and tumors.
Poliomyelitis has long been considered the most important cause of virus-associated acute flaccid paralysis. However, due to the widespread use of polio vaccine, it is evident now that other enteroviruses and, indeed, arboviruses are more likely causes of these presentations.
The most common signs and symptoms of acute flaccid myelitis include: Sudden arm or leg weakness. Sudden loss of muscle tone....Other possible signs and symptoms include: Difficulty moving the eyes or drooping eyelids. Facial droop or weakness. Difficulty with swallowing or slurred speech. Pain in the arms, legs, neck or back.
Differentiating Between Spastic vs Flaccid Paralysis One key difference is that in spastic paralysis, the muscles remain in constant contraction and become rigid and immobile. On the other hand, in flaccid paralysis, the muscles cannot contract and as a result become floppy and immobile.
stiff (spastic paralysis), with occasional muscle spasms. floppy (flaccid paralysis) numb, painful or tingly.

Strokes and spinal cord injuries are the top causes of paralysis. Other causes include: Autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS) and Guillain-Barré syndrome.
For example, if the somatic nerves to a skeletal muscle are severed, then the muscle will exhibit flaccid paralysis. When muscles enter this state, they become limp and cannot contract.
Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a rare but serious condition that affects the nervous system, causing muscles to weaken. AFM can be caused by a variety of germs (including viruses), environmental factors and genetics.
Clinicians diagnose AFM by taking a thorough medical history, doing a physical exam, and performing an MRI to review pictures of the spinal cord. Currently, there is no specific treatment for AFM, but clinicians may recommend different interventions based on each patient.
