hello and welcome today im going to be showing you how i make my foil proxies for magic the gathering here on screen are some examples of what the finished product looks like for this tutorial youre going to need a bottle of acetone and make sure its 100 acetone because regular nail polish remover isnt strong enough youre also going to need cotton pads or cotton balls some two-sided tape paper towels and about five bucks to take to your local print shop okay lets get started the first thing youre going to want to do is take a foil basic land or foil and tape the back of the card to some paper towels so the card doesnt move around and then were going to take a cotton pad thats been lightly soaked in acetone and were gonna just scrub the face of the card and remove all of that ink until were left with a blank foil like this one that still has the magic card back and once we have our foil blank ready for printing the next thing were going to do is make the actual card image

Theres a pretty wide range for how to make a proxy. Some people just write the name and abilities on a piece of paper covering a reversed card in a sleeve, some write the name of a card on the back of a bulk card like basic lands, and many people just print out the card in question.
Some of these proxy cards are so professionally made that they can pass as real Magic cards to the untrained eye, and are therefore effectively counterfeits. The production of these cards, for sale, is of course illegal.
However, printing proxies is ILLEGAL if you try to sell the proxies for profit. Thats called counterfeiting, and its a HUGE problem in the Magic community right now. Of course wizards is going to use language on their website that discourages people from printing proxies and encourages them to buy real cards.
Reproduction of copyrighted material is completely fine if it is considered Fair Use under the Fair Use Doctrine.
A proxy card is an easily acquired or home-made substitute for a collectible card. A proxy is used when a collectible card game player does not own a card, and it would be impractical for such purposes to acquire the card.
Proxies arent legal in MTG, and depending on how theyre made, they sometimes skirt the line of legal in general. Counterfeit cards and proxy cards arent technically the same. There is a distinction, but it can be a bit of a grey area.
They can also be used as s for copy effects, proxies, or if it is for a legendary creature it could be a good way to store experience counters, life total, commander tax, etc.
