in Sheffield we have a weekly improvement meeting with community health and social care staff in one of those weekly meetings one of the attendees asked when our patients the frail older ones have completed their acute phase of care why do we assess their ongoing support needs in hospital kitchens hospital bathrooms hospital staircases when actually those back in the patients own home are nothing like the ones we have in hospital environment that led to discussion one of our therapists volunteered said Id like to be the first one to try to flip this over instead of assessing a patient to plan their discharge support needs could we actually discharge a patient to their own home and assess them as they got home and meet their care needs in real time during that week a patient and their family were found and gave permission for this new way of working to be tested the next week the therapists reported out what happened she said I didnt think this was going to work as I got the patient

If an infected cut is not treated promptly, the infection will begin to spread into the deeper tissues under the skin. This is called cellulitis. The infection can travel through your blood to other parts of your body. Once the infection spreads, you will begin to feel generally unwell and develop a fever.
An infected wound can happen when germs or bacteria find a way into the sensitive tissues beneath our skin via the wound. Infection can develop any time between two to three days after the cut occured, until its visibly healed.
After the wound has been cleaned, dry it and keep it covered with antibiotic ointment, such as Neosporin, and a bandage until new skin has developed over the wound. If the redness continues to spread or the cut begins to ooze pus, seek medical attention. Dont try to treat signs of infection in a large cut at home.
Symptoms of Wound Infections Pus. Pus or cloudy fluid is draining from the wound. Pimple. A pimple or yellow crust has formed on the wound. Soft Scab. The scab has increased in size. Red Area. Increasing redness occurs around the wound. Red Streak. More Pain. More Swelling. Swollen Node.
Additional warning signs that your wound has become infected include: Warm, red skin surrounding the wound. Yellowish-green discharge/pus leaking from the wound. Odor coming from the wound.
There are a number of tell-tale signs that your cut may be infected: The surrounding area becomes red, and this area gets larger over time. The area surrounding the wound becomes swollen, tender to the touch, or painful. The wound weeps off-color or odorous fluid; this pus may be yellow, greenish, or cloudy.

After the initial discharge of a bit of pus and blood, your wound should be clear. If the discharge continues through the wound healing process and begins to smell bad or have discoloration, its probably a sign of infection.
