When you cut with a table saw, tearouts are formed. Tape prevents wood tearouts. Thin mdf board will also prevent tearout from the wood. If you cut fibers of wood with a knife, you will get a cleaner cut. If you lift the table saw a little and cut, less tearout will be formed. No tearout are formed thanks to a thin sheet of plexiglass.
