Blood transfusion services (BTS) have the responsibility to collect blood only from donors who are at low risk for any infection that could be transmitted through transfusion and who are unlikely to jeopardize their own health by blood donation.
Wait if you have a fever or a productive cough (bringing up phlegm). Wait if you do not feel well on the day of donation. Wait until you have completed antibiotic treatment for sinus, throat or lung infection. If you ever received a dura mater (brain covering) transplant you are not eligible to donate.
Must not donate if: If an individual has an uninfected wound or small non-infected aphthous ulcers only, accept. An infected wound, a sore or an ulcer is a risk for bacteria entering the blood. Bacteria can be a serious threat to anybody receiving blood or blood components.
Donate When You Feel Well: Only donate if you feel healthy. You need your plasma to fight off infections. Scrapes and Scratches: Cover any scrapes or scratches on your exposed skin before donating.
You can give blood when all wounds, injuries, minor cuts, scratches or abrasions are fully healed. You cannot give blood while awaiting medical treatment or investigations. If you have had stitches you must wait until these have been removed / dissolved and the wound is fully healed before you give blood.
Many people are reluctant to make their first blood donation, but once they do, they find the donation process to be easy and gratifying. I Dont Like Needles.
