A cervical biopsy is a procedure to remove tissue from the cervix to test for abnormal or precancerous conditions, or cervical cancer. The cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus. It forms a canal that opens into the vagina. Cervical biopsies can be done in several ways.
HPV 3 lesions show little hyperkeratosis, while HPV 10 and 28 lesions are more hyperkeratotic and can resemble early common warts. Plane warts exhibit an unusual phenomenon in that they often show spontaneous regression of all present, observed as superficial swelling and rash.
Hyperkeratosis is a finding of dried skin cells on your Pap smear. This change in the cells of the cervix often occurs from cervical cap or diaphragm use or from infection. Hyperkeratosis usually does not need any more evaluation than a repeat Pap smear in six months.
If you have a biopsy of your cervix, you may have some vaginal bleeding after the colposcopy. If your provider used the liquid bandage solution, you may have brown or black vaginal discharge that looks like coffee grounds. This should resolve within a few days.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
It represents a premature (keratinocytes that are located below the granular cell layer) or abnormal keratinization of individual keratinocytes. Hyperkeratosis, associated with other abnormalities in the skin biopsy, can be a key to the final histological diagnosis.
There are five main categories of abnormal Pap smear results within the Bethesda system: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL). Atypical squamous cells that may or may not be HSIL (ASC-H). Atypical glandular cells (AGC). Cancer.
Cells are scraped from the opening of the cervix and examined under a microscope to see if there are any abnormal cells.
