How Hot Is Too Hot? Based on our own experience in the sled pulling and drag racing world, we can definitely say that any engine running at 1,800 to 2,000 degrees EGT for more than a second or two should be rebuilt every season and may incur turbocharger, cylinder head, or piston damage during the season.
For towing, we'd say 1,200 degrees is a safe number, with occasional spikes of up to 1,400 degrees when climbing grades being an acceptable risk.
Symptoms of a Faulty EGTS Check Engine Light. Reduced Fuel Efficiency. Unnecessary DPF Regeneration. Failed Emissions Test. Component Failure.
As diesel engines run hotter, their efficiency decreases because more fuel is needed to produce power. High EGT readings can be caused by a number of problems, including over-fueling, overheating, or blocked air intake filters or ducting.
Exhaust gas temperature sensors defective: Causes of failure Internal damage to the electrical wiring caused by strong vibrations in the exhaust gas system. Excessively high exhaust gas temperatures as a result of defects in the injection system or in the air-fuel mix.
If everything is working properly, 1250º to 1300º F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300º F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.

Once the DPF reaches approximately 840° F (450° C), the High Exhaust System Temperature (HEST) Lamp illuminates. When regeneration is complete, the engine returns to idle. If any of the above conditions change, manual regeneration deactivates and the engine returns to idle.
Similarly, low EGT is an indication of an abnormally small combustion event. Trace this to an extreme fuel flow reduction (in effect, placing that cylinder well lean of peak); intake-air blockage; some valve train malady like a collapsed lifter, bent pushrod, or fractured cam lobe; or faulty ignition source.
A faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor can negatively affect a vehicle's after-treatment system, resulting in the following symptoms: Check engine light: if the ECU detects a problem with the sensor or signal, it will trigger the check engine light to come on.
