In Ontario, landlords are only allowed to request an upfront deposit for rent and keys. It is illegal for landlords to charge a damage deposit or a pet deposit. It is also illegal for landlords to require that you provide post-dated cheques.
A tenant has the right to deny entry to the landlord if the landlord has not met the requirements under the RTA relating to entry. A tenant does not have the right to deny entry simply because the time of entry is not convenient to the tenant.
The landlord must give the tenant a receipt for any rent payment, rent deposit or other charge, if the tenant asks for one. A landlord must also give a former tenant a receipt if that person asks for one within 12 months after the end of their tenancy. The landlord cannot charge a fee for giving a receipt.

Under the Act, landlords have several important rights, including the right to: select their tenants, using income information, credit checks and references, rental history, and similar-type criteria as prescribed in the Ontario Human Rights Code, collect rent,
T2 Application - Harassment. Section 23 states that a landlord shall not harass, obstruct, coerce, threaten or interfere with a tenant.
