Hi everyone, Laura from Nanny Parent Connection here. Welcome back to my video series working with a nanny from A to Z. So far in this series, weve covered everything from Is a nanny right to your family to Tips for interviewing your nanny. Today in episode #9 We will cover everything you need to know about the nanny contract. So, why is it important to have a nanny contract? The main reason is to outline the details of the working agreement so that there is no misunderstanding of the day-to-day workings between the nanny and the family. It also offers protections for the family to ensure that nanny care is being provided in the way that they would like. It offers protection to the nanny to make sure they know what to expect for the position, and lastly, it helps to shape the parameters of the position for both the family and the nanny. Many families choose to pay their nannies under the table, and as such, they dont work with a contract. I do always reco

Outside of a contractual end date, there is a generally accepted one year professional commitment in the nanny industry. This gives parents continuity around childcare and caregivers continuity around employment. (Secure childcare is also best for the child.)
In general, nannies should give as much notice as they can comfortable give, with the minimum being two weeks, unless of course unusual circumstances require an immediate departure.
The notice period within the probationary period is around one week for employees and employers. Once the nannys probationary period ends this can be extended or deferred to the nannys notice period (4 to 6 weeks in the nanny market).
Your contract should outline the schedule the nanny is being asked to work and how much they will be compensated. It should clearly state the hourly rate and what the gross salary comes to, Thomason says, along with overtime rates. It really helps to go over the hours expected.
It is advised that you have a probationary period written into your nannys contract this is usually 3 months (with the option to extend to 6 months). This has a shorter notice period, typically one week to either employer or employee.
Consult your work agreement (if you have one) When giving notice, youll want to refer back to your written work agreement and follow the terms that youve agreed on, explains LaRowe Conover. Typically nannies are expected to give two weeks notice and provide written notification of that notice.
Its important to give your employers plenty of time to prepare for your leave. You might have a contract that states how much notice youre required to give the company. If you dont have a specific notice timeframe, its best practice to give two to six weeks of notice.
Once it has been decided that a nanny is leaving, ask for her advice on how you can both support your child. Work together to put the children first. It may be helpful for the nanny to sit down with a child and explain why she has to move on.
