By the 17th century, Virginia's tobacco plantations were flourishing, but attracting new laborers became challenging due to the colony's poor reputation for food scarcity, rampant disease, and conflicts with Native Americans. Many potential settlers from England were reluctant to relocate. To incentivize labor, plantation owners offered to pay for workers' passage to America in exchange for five to seven years of indentured servitude, a key method for populating the colonies. Initially lasting seven years, the indenture period decreased to five or even four years as productivity increased. Like slaves, indentured servants could be bought or sold, required permission to marry, and faced punishment for disobedience. However, those who completed their term could gain freedom and receive "freedom dues."
