Halloween, a holiday observed on October 31 and noted for its pagan and religious roots and secular traditions. In much of Europe and most of North America, observance of Halloween is largely nonreligious, celebrated with parties, spooky costumes, jack-o-lanterns, pumpkin carvings, and the giving of candy.
Halloweens origins can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain, which was held on November 1 in contemporary calendars. It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits.
Yet, the Halloween holiday has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced SAH-win), a pagan religious celebration to welcome the harvest at the end of summer, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.
On this night, when it is dark, children dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating around their neighborhood. Adults have Halloween parties. Candy is given out (and eaten). Jack-o-lanterns are lit.
NYC DOT partners with Open Streets, plazas, and other corridors on Halloween to add pedestrian space during one of the busiest nights of the year. This year, over 100 events will feature new, car-free Trick-or-Streets programming and giveaways at locations in all five boroughs.
Popular Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising and souling), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins or turnips into jack-o-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching
