After years of reviewing resumes, I have compiled a short list of weak verbs and phrases to stay away from: Worked with, Responsible for, Experienced, Tried, Does, Made, Watched. There are also verbs that are perfectly fine but overused: Assisted, Led, Oversaw, Utilized.
Filler words in your resume take up extra space and dont necessarily help give a clear picture of your story, career expert Amanda Augustine shares with CNBC Make It. Pronouns like I and me, and adverbs such as frequently, efficiently, diligently, thoroughly, quickly, are best avoided.
Include only your street address, city, state abbreviation, and zip code. The longer you format your address, the more likely it will spill onto a second line. So abbreviate whenever you can (e.g., North as N., Road as Rd., and Massachusetts as MA).
Traditionally, including an address on a resume was standard practice as physical mail was the main way employers would respond after a submitted application. Today, most communication about the hiring process takes place online. As a result, including a full address is not always necessary.
Tips on Word Choice in Resumes You do not want to appear vague in your resume. Hiring managers are tired of hearing clichd words like team player and hard worker. Avoid these phrases at all cost. Include words and phrases that explain specifically what you accomplished in your previous jobs.
The bottom line is that you can (and should) omit your full mailing address from a resume. Its unnecessary and opens you up to privacy and discrimination concerns. Only put your city, state, and zip code as part of your contact information.
Here are six action verbs to use sparingly on your resume. Managed. Created. Helped. Assisted. Supported. Facilitated.
Additionally, given below are some general weaknesses examples in resumes: Lack of relevant skills. Multiple career changes. Incomplete degree. Irrelevant work experience. Poorly formatted resume. Lack of accomplishments. Layoffs. Inconsistent details and information.
