Try washing the garment in warm water with color-safe bleach. You might also try rubbing the stain with mineral spirits or acetone (for water-based wood stain). Make sure you always wear gloves and protect yourself when handling potentially harmful materials.
Simply use a lint-free rag soaked in mineral spirits or paint thinner to rub the areas of over-applicationwherever the stain has puddled or is thick and stickyto remove the excess stain. Areas of over-application may be noticeable because the stain is darker. Start with light pressure (this may be all you need).
A tacky stain will eventually dry if its water based. However, if you used an oil based deck stain it wont dry so you need to remove the excess with a rag and mineral spirits
The opposite is actually true: Wood stains tend to appear lighter when theyre fully dry. However, stains may darken as they weather and oxidize with age. Stains might also darken on surfaces left in direct sunlight, as UV rays can break down pigment particles and cause them to darken over time.
Often when people restain timber, the old Stain is either sanded away, is already flaking off, or can be restained over. While you can restain a deck over an existing stain without sanding or removing the existing peeling product, this isnt always recommended and can leave your deck looking a little worse for wear.
Lap marks are the result of inconsistent application of stain. If an area is permitted to dry, and then partially recoated, a lap mark will appear. Lap marks are permanent, and can not be removed.
