Step 1: Spray Deck and Wipe. To remove rust stains, spray a 50-50 solution of water and distilled white vinegar on the stain and let sit for about 10 minutes before wiping clean with a cloth. For stubborn stains, try using an oxalic acid cleaner following the manufacturers instructions.
Hirshfields shares how to begin this process. Step 1: Scrape. Scrape off as much of the old finish as you can with a paint scraper. Step 2: Strip. Use a deck stain remover. Step 3: Scrub. Take off old stain using a stiff brush and deck finish remover. Step 4: Sand. Step 5: Condition. Step 6: Stain.
Water-based stains need to be stripped off before you apply a new finish, while oil-based stains can be recoated after you use a deck cleaner. To test the stain: Apply a small amount of deck stripper to a small area on your deck. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then wipe it off with a cleaning rag.
While you can restain a deck over an existing stain without sanding or removing the existing peeling product, this isnt always recommended and can leave your deck looking a little worse for wear.
However, if you only need to remove stain from your deck rather than paint, then the Restore-A-Deck Wood Stain Stripper would be your best purchase. With excellent results on semi-transparent stain and a cost of just $7 per gallon once diluted, you would be hard-pressed to find a better wood stripper for the money.
Use a deck stain remover. Be sure to cover nearby siding, bushes, and grass around the deck. Spread a generous amount of stain remover over the boards. Move slowly covering 20 to 30 square feet at a time.
How to Strip Stain From Wood Prep the Wood Surface. Before stripping the finish, remove all hardware and clean the wood surface with soap and water and let dry. Apply Stripping Gel. Scrape the Stripping Gel. Remove the Stripping Gel. Treat Scuffs and Holes. Sand the Wood. Clean the Surface.
In almost all instance sanding back your deck to bare timber will give you the best results when compared to stripping agents but the cost factor and job site surrounds will need to be taken into consideration when making your final decision.
