i think one of the biggest questions i get from clients and friends is how do we get our beautiful finish on wood countertops with its butcher block or like this live edge piece here so iamp;#39;ve tried to explain it to people and walk them through it but how do you briefly put 20 years plus of experience staining and finishing in this short conversation so i thought iamp;#39;d go ahead and make a video and this this video is going to show you how we prep and gel coat a stain and then do a polyurethane finish so a critical step thatamp;#39;s often overlooked because people assume that these slabs are sanded properly from the manufacturer is sanding and we want to sand everything to a consistent 120 grit sandpaper so what youamp;#39;re going to see here is is iamp;#39;ve put a light pencil mark everywhere just to make sure that i that i hit every piece of this of this exposed butcher block a little bit time consuming but incredibly necessary to get the consistency that weamp;#39;

However, if you have no idea if the stain on your deck was water-based or oil-based, you will need to perform a quick test. Water-based stains need to be stripped off before you apply a new finish, while oil-based stains can be recoated after you use a deck cleaner.
Start by stripping off what you can (as described above), then seal the wood with a water-thin mix of de-waxed shellac and alcohol. Saturate the wood with the solution and wipe it off. Let it dry for 2 hours. Then switch to a 100 percent pigmented stain, such as Varathane (most stains are a mix of dye and pigment).
You should wait 4 hours between applying your first and second coats of stain or until the first coat is completely dry. Additionally, you should wait 24 hours before walking on the newly stained deck. This allows the stain to penetrate and bond with the wood surface fully.
If you buy ordinary pressure-treated lumber from a home center, however, youll have to wait anywhere from two to three days for the wood to dry sufficiently before you can apply a water-based semitransparent protective stain. Give rough-cut lumber a new and finished look by applying a stain before you begin your project. Staining rough-cut lumber is different from staining traditional lumber, so be sure to use the right method. Find a well-ventilated area to do the staining. The traditional rule-of-thumb for air-drying lumber is to allow one year of drying time per inch of wood thickness; this adage obviously only takes a few of the aforementioned variables into account, but its at least a rough starting point in understanding the time investment required in order to properly air-dry Drying Wood at Home | The Wood Database The Wood Database Wood Articles The Wood Database Wood Articles
The surface must be free of dirt and other contaminants. New cedar fences can be stained within a couple of weeks, while pressure-treated pine materials require 60-90 days for the wood to dry and ensure it is porous enough to accept the stain.
