There are two primary categories of vias, depending on where they are in the PCB layers — the blind hole and the buried hole. In a blind hole, the hole penetrates the top or bottom layer of the board but stops before any of the internal layers.
The typical layout shows a via capture pad size of 0.660 mm, a via size of 0.254 mm, and an inner space and trace of 0.102 mm. With this layout, only one trace can be routed between the vias.
The key difference between a via and a pad is that as well as being able to span all layers of the board (top to bottom), a via can also span from a surface layer to an internal layer or between two internal layers.
Via Sizing Calculations and Charts Minimum hole size = Maximum lead diameter + 0.25 mm (Level) Minimum hole size = Maximum lead diameter + 0.20 mm (Level B) Minimum hole size = Maximum lead diameter + 0.15 mm (Level C)
Pads generally have a large hole to accommodate a wire or pin and are "all layer", i.e. the hole passes through all layers. Vias have a small hole and copper land and are generally used for connecting tracks or copper between layers.
To graphically change a selected object, click and hold on an editing handle. That point of the object will then become attached to the cursor. Move the mouse to a new location and release to resize.
Minimum-sized vias (0.25-0.3 mm) are typically preferred. Smaller epoxy-filled vias require less material; however, depending on board thickness, smaller vias may necessitate laser drilling.
The term via (or via hole) means an electrical connection between different layers of a printed circuit board. Via is basically a small hole made through the PCB laminates that crosses two or more adjacent layers.
Pads generally have a large hole to accommodate a wire or pin and are "all layer", i.e. the hole passes through all layers. Vias have a small hole and copper land and are generally used for connecting tracks or copper between layers.
PCB Aspect Ratio and Via Plating ing to IPC-6012, classes 1 and 2 require an average copper plating thickness of 20um or more, and no less than 18um in thin areas, while class 3 requires a 25um average thickness or more and not less than 20um in thin areas.
