The GHG Emissions Calculation Tool is a free, Excel-based tool from Greenhouse Gas Protocol and WRI that helps companies estimate their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on the GHG Protocol. This tool was previously available as a beta version.
Scope 1 emissions are direct greenhouse (GHG) emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or owned by an organization (e.g., emissions associated with fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces, vehicles).
The emissions baseline represents what would happen if your project did not occur. The emissions baseline provides a point against which you measure any changes in the amount of emissions produced by a project in a reporting period. You use this change in emissions to calculate net abatement.
The most common method is the Tier 1 Calculation Method: GHG emission = 0.001 * Fuel Usage * High heat value *Emission factor. You can get these values from the EPAs GHG Reporting Program (GHGRP) documentation and your own records.
GHG Reduction) means actions designed to reduce emissions of one or all of the following gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride.
Baseline emissions are calculated by looking at a baseline emissions period, usually the past 1 - 5 years of an organisations activity. If no action is taken to reduce emissions, this is the level at which they can be expected to remain.
Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by the reporting company. Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a companys value chain.
The boundary of a Net Zero target includes global scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions of the organisation, whereas carbon neutrality for an organisation only requires scope 1 and 2, with scope 3 emissions encouraged but not mandatory.
GHG emission = 0.001 * Fuel Usage * High heat value *Emission factor. You can get these values from the EPAs GHG Reporting Program (GHGRP) documentation and your own records.
Calculate the emission rate by multiplying the emission factor by the maximum capacity of the operation (in units of production per hour, material usage per hour, or the units the emission factor is in).
