The sport of powerlifting is based on three activities: the squat, the bench press and the deadlift. Despite its name, powerlifting is an exercise in strength not power.
There are several classifications in powerlifting determining rank. These typically include Elite, Master, Class I,II,III,IV. The Elite standard is considered to be within the top 1% of competing powerlifters.
Powerlifting conducts events keeps Records for age groups from 40 pus, through 50, 60, 70 80 years plus. There are Australian Championships in all these age-groups then Oceania, Commonwealth World Championships up to over 70 years.
At a meet, the events will follow in order: squat, then bench press, and the deadlift will be the final lift of the meet. If the federation also has an event for strict curls, this will normally occur before the squat event.
In the deadlift, there is only one command the DOWN command. Unlike the squat and bench press where there are rules to start and end the movement, the deadlift doesnt have these commands.
A small weight cut and re-composition that can be done with an 18-24hr weigh-in can actually INCREASE performance on meet day when properly executed. The restriction period puts the body in a state of supercompensation. The body will take in and hold additional fluids and blood glucose that it wouldnt normally retain.
Here are a few things I would like to pass along for those thinking about competing in their first powerlifting meet. Dont Cut Weight. Dont Wait Until You Are More Competitive Set Realistic Goals. Peak Smart, Dont Miss Lifts. Practice Commands. Be Conservative and Plan Ahead. Know the Federations Rules. Get a Handler.
Three lift results will not count toward single lift records and vice versa. 8 Beanie hats or skull caps will be allowed at State and Local meets only. a t-shirt, singlet and belt only no other equipment will be allowed.
When the lifter is motionless (in the apparent final position ) the Chief Referee will give the signal to rack the bar. The signal to rack the bar will consist of a backward motion of the arm and the audible command Rack. The lifter must then move forward and return the bar to the racks.
What you shouldnt do is second guess your training, you shouldnt try to test your maxes or lift too much in the week before you compete, says Paulie. Everyone gets nervous and wants to try and hit their numbers before they compete because they dont trust that theyre going to hit them on the day.
