The easiest way to give your dog a pill is to hide the pill in food. This usually works best if you hide it in a special treat such as a small amount of canned dog food, cooked sweet potato, or a soft dog treat that can be molded around it (i.e., Pill Pockets).
Some pets will eat around the pill and then spit it out or refuse to eat food that has been dosed with medication. Your veterinarian may also recommend against pulverizing a pill or emptying the contents of a capsule if a pill has a bitter flavor or if its essential that your pet get every last bit of the medication.
Place the medication in a small amount of wet food, if they like it. Use a bit of peanut butter or cream cheese to disguise the pill. Plain yogurt is another good food that can mask medication. A piece of cheese, hot dog or liverwurst can conceal the pill.
Hide the pill in your dogs food Generally, its best to choose food with strong flavors that can easily be lumped to hide the pill inside. Ideally, you should start giving a few pieces of the specific food or treat first before giving them the one with a tablet inside.
Many prescription drugs like antibiotics, antifungal medications, and even antidepressants can be used for both pets and humans. In these cases, you can often fill your pet prescriptions at your regular pharmacy, such as a CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart.
Use the middle finger of your right hand to pull open the lower jaw. Keep your middle finger over the small incisor teeth, not the sharp fangs (canine teeth). Drop the pill or capsule as far back over the tongue as possible, then immediately close the mouth and blow on the dogs nose to encourage it to swallow.
