So what can you use to cut rocks? The best tool for cutting rocks is a diamond saw due to its hardness and cutting accuracy. Since diamond saws are very expensive, a suitable alternative for cutting rocks is to use a Dremel drill, which provides sufficient quality at an affordable price.
Ever wanted to try if you can cut gemstones with a Dremel? Its actually easier than you would think. Depending on the hardness of your gemstone it can take a while, but you dont have to invest in expensive lapidary equipment.
The earliest roots of drilling rocks date back to approximately one million years ago. The early Egyptians developed cutting and jewelry fashioning methods for lapis lazuli, turquoise, and amethyst. The art of lapidary was relatively well-developed in the Indian subcontinent by the early 1st millennium CE.
How were they made? The earliest engraved gems were cut by hand with simple iron tools, including pointed drills and cutting wheels, used in combination with fine abrasive emery powders. The diamond-tipped drill was introduced in the 5th century BC but did not become common until centuries later.
Well, some of it was just really hard work, basically rubbing two stones together, one much harder than the other, to shape and polish the softer stone. Stone and copper chisels were also used, an equally tedious process considering that the chisels were often made of rock softer than the material you were carving.
Method: Lay the lowest grade sandpaper (the 180 grit) out onto the chopping board rough side up. Pour a small amount of water onto the centre of the sandpaper. Polish the stone by rubbing the gemstone over with the sandpaper and water to create a smooth facet.
Until the late Middle Ages, gems of all kinds were simply cut either en cabochon or, especially for purposes of incrustation, into flat platelets. The cutting known as faceting gradually developed from the first attempts in the 15th century, probably in France and the Netherlands.
For rock carving, you need diamond bits. If you cant find what you need in the Dremel lineup, look for inexpensive 3rd party kits. There are lots of size and shape options out there, including cylinders, tapers, balls, cones and discs.
