When you make a cut in a piece of pressure-treated lumber, you expose the interior wood fiber to water, fungus and insects that the pressure treatment would otherwise protect against. Sealing the end cuts with an approved liquid preservative becomes an important way to protect your investment.
Whilst treating or sealing any cut ends is important with any Treated Lumber product, maintaining a sealed end is most important when applicating Pressure Treated lumber in-ground, such as Fence Posts and Landscaping / Retaining Wall.
It's important to allow the wood time to completely dry before applying stain or sealant, otherwise, you'll be sealing moisture into the wood. Once a deck has been stained or sealed, it will need to be re-applied every 2-5 years depending on the product selected, and how much traffic your deck sees.
Following construction, most manufacturers of stains and paints recommend a waiting period – from a week to two months – before applying a finish to treated wood, if the project was built with lumber that was not kiln-dried after treatment (KDAT).
I use it on the pretreated ends as well for good measure. One coat on treated ends and two on newly cut ends.
