The CUT command is a command-line tool for cutting data from each line of files and writing the result to standard output. It can be used to cut parts of a line by byte position, character, and delimiter. It can also be used to cut data from file formats like CSV.
Use the cut command to write selected bytes, characters, or fields from each line of a file to standard output. This displays the login name and full user name fields of the system password file. These are the first and fifth fields ( -f1,5 ) separated by colons ( -d: ).
cut accepts a single-character delimiter, and is suitable only for very simple text file formats. Awk is much more versatile, and can handle somewhat more complex field delimiter definitions and even (in some dialects) a regular expression. By default, Awk regards sequences of whitespace as a single delimiter.
Each line of the file can be sliced and the required data can be retrieved easily by using `cut` command. It can also be used to cut text by delimiter or character or byte position. This command has many options to cut data from the text or file in different ways.

To cut using a delimiter use the -d option. This is normally used in conjunction with the -f option to specify the field that should be cut.
The -f is the field specifier and the -d is the delimiter. The command above says to first cut the line up using as the delimiter, and return back the 2nd field( -f2 ). The second command cuts up that result using the : delimiter, and returns back the 1st field( -f1 ).
