The -f is the field specifier and the -d is the delimiter. The command above says to first cut the line up using " as the delimiter, and return back the 2nd field( -f2 ). The second command cuts up that result using the : delimiter, and returns back the 1st field( -f1 ).
-d, --delimiter=DELIM: It is used to cut a specific section by a delimiter. -f, --fields=LIST: It is used to select the specific fields. It also prints any line that does not contain any delimiter character, unless the -s option is specified. -n: It is used to ignore any option.

cut uses -f (meaning "fields") to specify columns and -d (meaning "delimiter") to specify the separator. You need to specify the latter because some files may use spaces, tabs, or colons to separate columns....Possible Answers cut -d , -f 1 seasonal/spring.csv. cut -d, -f1 seasonal/spring.csv. Either of the above.
The cut command removes the selected data from its original position, while the copy command creates a duplicate; in both cases the selected data is kept in temporary storage (the clipboard). The data from the clipboard is later inserted wherever a paste command is issued.
