Now there are three basic principles of quoting The quote itself has to be surrounded by quotation marks Cite the author correctly so make sure you include the authors name, the year, and if its from a book or journal, You need the exact page number as well. Citing an Indirect (Secondary) Source However, if you need to cite an indirect source, as the manual refers to secondary sources, if what you quote or paraphrase is itself a quotation, put the abbreviation qtd. in (quoted in) before the indirect source you cite in your parenthetical reference.
Ellipsis points are used to represent an omission from a direct quotation when it is cited by another writer. This series of three dotswith a space before, after, and between them ( . . . )is inserted where a word, phrase, sentence (or more) is left out.
Yes, you can leave out words you deem unnecessary in a quotation, but you cant take out words that will change its meaning.
Use ellipsis points to show omission within the quotation. Omit any punctuation on either side of the ellipsis, unless the punctuation is necessary to make the shortened quotation grammatically correct.
You can shorten quotes by removing words from the middle of the quote and adding ellipses to indicate that you have removed some words. Shortening quotes helps the reader focus on the key information.
In-text citations include the last name of the author followed by a page number enclosed in parentheses. Heres a direct quote (Smith 8). If the authors name is not given, then use the first word or words of the title. Follow the same formatting that was used in the works cited list, such as quotation marks.
You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
Shortening a quote If some parts of a passage are redundant or irrelevant, you can shorten the quote by removing words, phrases, or sentences and replacing them with an ellipsis (). Put a space before and after the ellipsis. Be careful that removing the words doesnt change the meaning.
To keep it straight, follow these two simple rules: First, when quoting a full, complete sentence, the first word of that quote should always be capitalized. Alternatively, when a quote only references a fragment of a quote, a phrase, or part of a sentence, the first word of the quote does not need to be capitalized.
A quote can be split by the attribution the who said. You have to decide whether the 2nd half is a full sentence or not. If the 2nd half is a continuation of the quote, then dont use a capital. If the 2nd half is a sentence by itself, then use a capital.
