You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
Edited or truncated quotations If the source quotation is truncated, either in the middle or at the end of the quotation, use ellipses to mark the point of the omitted material. Do not use ellipses at the start of the quote, even if material has been omitted there.
If the original quote is too long and you feel not all the words are necessary in your own paper, you may omit part of the quote. Replace the missing words with an ellipsis.
Use quotation marks around both parts of the interrupted quotation. Examples: The book, whispered the librarian, is on the second shelf by the wall. When Mom comes home, my sister said, tell her Im going to Sandys house.
Use ellipsis points to show omission within the quotation. Omit any punctuation on either side of the ellipsis, unless the punctuation is necessary to make the shortened quotation grammatically correct.
You can shorten quotes by removing words from the middle of the quote and adding ellipses to indicate that you have removed some words. Shortening quotes helps the reader focus on the key information. You can remove words that are redundant or irrelevant to the point you are making.
Use an ellipsis in the middle of a quotation to indicate that you have omitted material from the original sentence, which you might do when it includes a digression not germane to your point.
Shortening a quote If you want to omit some words, phrases, or sentences from the quote to save space, use an ellipsis (. . .) with a space before and after it to indicate that some material has been left out. If the part you removed includes a sentence break, add a period before the ellipsis to indicate this.
A quote can be split by the attribution the who said. You have to decide whether the 2nd half is a full sentence or not. If the 2nd half is a continuation of the quote, then dont use a capital. If the 2nd half is a sentence by itself, then use a capital.
Partial Direct Quotation (used to remove text from the middle of a quotation) Definition: The use of a direct quotation in which a middle section of the quote has been removed. The text that has been directly quoted must be enclosed in quotation marks and the source must be cited.
